First time boat owner here. Ive got an 86 capri 17' with a 150hp black max that wont cold start unless I use starting fluid. Is this a comon problem with 2 stroke out boards?
Im thinking that the solonoids on the carbs are cold start solonoids. Could this be the possible problem?

Thanks in advance.

First, starting fluid will kill your engine. It is lubricated through the fuel, and starting fluid washes all that off, not to mention the knocking and preignition that occurs when you use that.

That engine has a solenoid valve, operated by pressing in the key switch, that routes fuel from the top carb float chamber to behind all 3 carbs. Press the key in and you should hear it click. Hold it in for 5 seconds or so, and then crank the engine while you're holding it in. It helps to advance the fast idle throttle when you're starting also.

It would help you immensely to acquire an owners manual and read it.

That ain't a fricken stratton lawn mower engine, it's a high performance 2 cycle V6.

I have a similar 135, and the key choke has no "click" is that a bad switch, or is there a soleniod somewheres? I've been overpumping the ball a few times and advancing the throttle to start it, but would be nice to have the key choke back.

There's another book you need to get, the Mercury factory service manual. Diagram's in the book, complete with color codes, and instructions on how to trouble shoot it.
