cold start issue

I just recently picked up a 1972 Fiberform with a 1972 Johnson 60 hp. When I lift the cold start lever and turn the key I get nothing. no turn over, no click , Nothing. When I put the cold start lever all the way down in the run position it turns over and eventually starts. Lift it up and nothing. As if the battery was disconnected. I did a quick search but couldn't find anything to help me out. The person I got it from said it has always been like that. I fish the cold winter months so I am pretty sure I am going to need it fixed. Has anyone ever ran across this problem or does anyone have any advice that may help me out. I can not afford the shop to look at it

I believe there is a safety switch on the motor.-------On the throttle lever.----May need to adjust it.----Only 1 white wire goes to it.-----Prevents cranking when too much throttle is applied.

The 'cold start lever' is not really that. It's more so for once you get the engine started you can bring the RPMs up without being in gear. Sometimes with a flooded engine you'll need to lift up on that lever.

When lifting up that lever you are actually opening the butterflies on the Carbs slightly letting more air in, which on a cold start is a bad thing, you need more fuel.

Not sure exactly which control box you have but either by pushing in on the key or there may be a toggle switch below the key, it will activate the choke. Hold the choke closed while turning the key until the engine fires. Even once the engine starts you may need to hit the choke to keep keep it running.

Since the engine is new to you I would recommend removing the top cowl and maybe the air box to watch how it works so you have a better understanding of the choke.

NO------The choke flappers block the air and throttle plates need to be open a wee bit.------So lift the cold start lever on first " cold " start !!
