cold start

The cold start on my 1981 70 hp evinrude not longer works. I have taken the control apart and do not see any issues there. When you raise the lever, it tries to open the throttle, but will not. If I detatch the throttle cable at the motor, it moves freely with the cold start and I have no issues with the throttle if I use the main throttle, shifter lever. Is this a stretched cable? Any other suggestions? I have been a lurker for several months, but this is my first post.

Re: cold start

Welcome to iboats.

So your throttle works as it should but the timing advance lever doesn't?

That works through the throttle cable, there is only one, so it would have to be a control box problem, something isn't letting it pull the cable when you lift the lever.

Run through the control box again and make sure nothing is missing and it is assembled right, there is alot of stuff in there that has to line up just right.

You said you took the "control'' apart, I assume that is the throttle box itself, I really think that is where the problem is.

Re: cold start

What puzzles me is that the cold start works when disconnected from the motor. It moves without resistance. When connected to the motor it tries to move, but something seems to be keeping it from moving like the cable is trying to bow. The main shift throttle lever seems to put more pressure on it. It is probably time for a new control box, but not in the budget this season. I will break it down and look again.

Re: cold start

When disconnected does the throttle cable move back and forth or is it hard to move?

You may just need a new cable.

To clarify, I am not familiar with the term"cold start", are you talking about the lever on the control box or the choke when you push the key in?

Just making sure we are on the same page.

Don't give up hope just yet.

Re: cold start

The lever on the side. It does seem to move freely when disconnected from the motor. The cable flexes about two feet forward of the motor when I lift the lever. That is what made me think it is the cable. I used to have to tighten up a screw in the control box about twice a year in spite of using loctite. I fixed it this year by boring a through hole in the conrtol box and putting a thru bolt in its place(threads were stripped).
