Cold water being pumped into bildge

Hello all - been reading and learning a lot from this forum- first time poster.
while running muffs I was getting cold water entering the bilge adjacent to the water tube, which lead me to believe the tube may have been cracked, turns out it wasnt. Upon dissamblily to investigate I found some things along the way...the O-ring for the water passage on the outdrive was non existant, and the gasket for the drive shaft was in pieces. The UJ bellows was full of water. I'm guessing water was making it's way into the bellows and actually pushing out through the gimbal ring and into the bildge. For grins, I put grease to the gimbal bearing and u joints and pushed a bunch of water out of both (parts for both are sitting on the shelf along with new bellows) Put new gasket and O-Ring on drive and no water coming in. I bring this up to seek opinion if this is plausable or if I should suspect another issue.
I don't think the water passage O-ring was ever installed, but if it was is there anyway it could have been pushed up into the engine?

the serial numbers are difficult to read but I think I see 065 for the first 3 of the outdrive and 0C5 for the transom.

Best,
Matt

Doc, Bondo. Thanks for the replies. It's nice to get some reassurance. I'm sure if it was some other fandagled thing causing water to come in you guys would know about.
