Coleman Steel Belted coolers?

Who's got one, and how do you think they compare to regular plastic coolers?<br /><br />I'm considering getting a stainless one, or the gold anniversary edition one on the Coleman website.

Swagon,<br /><br />I don't know about the stainless models but the "5" day cooler, makes it about 12 hours on my swim platform. It doesn't even come close to the advertised performance. But life on the swim platform is a rather tough environment. <br /><br />My parents have an old coleman steel jobber that has to be 30+ years old and still works well enough for them.

One of the reasons I'm looking at the steel ones, is that it's a 3day/100deg cooler, vs the 5day/90deg cooler. I figure 100 degrees is more realistic, especially if it's sitting in the sun. And the steel is(obviously) more durable than the plastic, as evidenced by your parents' cooler.

Boomer,<br /><br />I contacted them about a year or so ago and they don't have distribution here in the states. You will need to enlist the help of one of our friends down under to get one of these. I think. Maybe things have changed.

I looked at the steel belted ones a couple years ago, only steel on the top and sides, not the bottom.<br /><br />Their extreme 5 day and ultimate extreme 6-7 day coolers are much better than the regular el cheapos.<br /><br />I have one of the extreme 5 day models.<br />The directions say you need 36# of ice for the 50 qt model. !!!<br />It also helps to start with ice that is -5*, rather than the +20* ice from the gas station.<br /><br />My parents old green steel one from 1960? lasted about 30 years, then the latch wouldn't latch, the hinge wouldn't hinge, and the drain plug no longer plugged. I doubt it kept things as long as the new ones, but it lasted half a lifetime.

I bought a Coleman 5 day last year for 18 bucks at Costco. Works great...haven't really counted how many days it will last, but there's always ice left when I get back from a camping trip. Spend the money you saved over a $100+ cooler on dry ice. This year I think I'm going to buy a big CO2 tank so I can make my own dry ice...

I have one of the 5 day extremes and when we are going on a 4 or 5 day trip I pack it full of ice and then put it in the shade in camp. I only open it when I need ice in one of the other coolers so it only gets opened several times a trip. By doing this it lasts for the advertised 5 days. As roscoe said the colder the ice the better.

I have one each of the 5 day and 7 day Igloos. The 7 day is definately better.<br />I do the ice thing but add a small amount of dry ice on top. 4 day 90's weekend....no problem!!Just have to watch for beverages freezing!

My beer never last long enough to need a 5 day model.
