okay, not new to the forums, this is a new handle though. I've been working on a 1970 merc 1150 for the last year. I bought two boats. 85 cajun and 83 ranger 330V. cajun had new trolling motor, new wheels and tires, and new trolling motor, and a merc 1150. The ranger had old tires, hand controlled trolling motor, and johnson 140. I wanted to use the 140 but had cracked lower and no compression. paid 500 for the cajun and 900 for the ranger. neither motor ran. the 1150 runs like a champ now, link and syned, water pump, stator, radio shack full wave, and she'll push that ranger 42 mph. I also sold the cajun with no motor, old troll motor, and old tires for 500. So motor was free....well had lower trouble so traded the blown johnson and 125bucks for a new lower. Needless to say I don't have much in the ranger. Well I found a 1979 johnson 140. I'm VERY excited. It has good compression but will die when you put it in gear. Supposedly a mech said something about one cylinder firing at the wrong time or something. Anyways I think I can get it going then I'll sell the 1150 and get the ranger back to its rated hp with the 140 and it'll look better on the boat. Getting this engine, trailer, and boat (trash) for 500 bucks. will make a atv trailer out of the boat trailer...trash boat and hopefully get the motor going well. I know that isn't much info but I'm getting it this weekend and can't wait to dive in. I know AS SOON as I get it going sea foam and i will have a date so I don't have to worry about coked rings. What things do these engines need tune up wise?? like the link and sync on the mercs?? what about wiring?? The mech said it needed to be rewired? I've looked at parts and these are SO much cheaper electrically and much simpler than that 1150. I know I'll go through the carbs, lower unit, water pump, t-stats, and decarb...but what about timing and the such?? What about testing my coils, powerpacks, and such? how does this motor advance timing? I'll quit now..I absolutly love reading and learning about these motors..that merc I was told to use as an anchor and now I've pulled tubes, knee boards, skiiers, and skipped across the lake with a 40 year old motor..nothing like it. Thanks for you help and sorry for such a long post. I will keep you guys up dated and thank again! And please disregard the handle...its all in fun...lol...how about "mercinator"?? lol
