Commander Control Box Questions

I recently made this E-bay purchase to fit to a 1987 35 Hp Merc. I have puzzled out the throttle and shift cable attachments but have not been able to actuate the "Throttle Only" (Cold Start) buttton. I can push it in somewhat but it does not allow the throttle to advance independently without the shift advancing (something broken or missing?). I would like to know what is the proper action of this button , ie, push and hold in?, is it spring loaded?, does it return automatically to normal operation?

It would also be most helpful to me if someone can share with me a parts pictorial of this control so I may determine if I have all the pieces for proper operation of this control. I have a factory manual for the 35 HP engine, but it only shows the wiring schematic and does not reveal any operating or hookup instructions.

Thanks,
John

Re: Commander Control Box Questions

Having used one near exactly like that in the past, that button you are talking about (the squared button at the bottom of the handle) is there so you can push it in and more the lever handle forward to only throttle the engine out of gear (neutral). And once you bring the lever back to the center position again it will snap back into the gear engagement and throttle again. The squeeze lever on the top of the handle allows you to put it in gear, forward and reverse depending which direction you move the handle from the center position with that lever squeezed in while moving the handle... The little switch box towards the back of the control unit is the kill switch. If you have the proper kill key (adapter) you put it in that boxed area and toggle the toggle switch up. That allows you to crank the engine and holds the kill switch portion until you pull it out again which will disable the engine from starting and running. In an emergency you can just flip that toggle switch up and the engine will crank and run. But you will not have the kill option available until you use the correct key... You should be able to look on the website and find a good IPB (Illustrated Parts Breakdown) for that Mercury Control box and the available parts to purchase if needed. I personally like that Mercury Control setup myself...

GM covered it. Best I can guess is that the plastic pin on the rear of the square button has worn off or broken such that it can't reach the linkage to disengage it when you depress it. Later models of boxes with that kind of control are Quicksilver Commander 3000s. I assume the inner workings are identical, just a little cosmetic variance.

Check out this thread: http://forums.iboats.com/boat-topic...ard-push-quicksilver-1985-sea-ray-545508.html

Even though that isn't the exact control box that you have, the repair should be similar and the $10.00 part that fixes this problem, #817253A1, should be the same. Good luck, I just purchased a used commander 2000 box that I need to make this repair.

Edit - wrong link: Try this one: http://forums.iboats.com/boat-topic...ercury-quicksilver-control-repair-517884.html

Have no idea why, but if I click on the above link it doesn't go anywhere. However, if I go to my post in this thread: http://forums.iboats.com/boat-topic...ercury-quicksilver-control-repair-517884.html ; and click on the link, it goes to the quicksilver control manual (covers all the Commander controls).

What puzzles me is that I copied the link, in my above post, from my post in the old thread. Damn, I love computers :)

You mean a used 3000. The 2000 series has the fast idle lift lever on the top rear negating the need for a push button to disengage the shift linkage for fast idle. I recently trashed my 3000 because I got tired of fiddling with the button and now I have the 2000 with the nice, convenient, lift lever for fast idle....great! No big deal, but you never know whose reading this and forming ideas or whatever.

Re: Commander Control Box Questions

Many thanks to those who responded to assist me in solving my problem with my Commander control box. The link to the service manual was particularly helpful since I have 3 versions of these controls. With knowledge in hand, I visited my local Merc dealer and after a initial negative response from him, I managed to convince him that this was a repairable item and here is the part no. And lo and behold!, he was able to bring it up on his computer screen, and, wonder of wonders!, he even had the part in stock!

I am retired mechanical engineer and have sorta focused in on rescuing discarded and unwanted 80's vintage Merc 35 and 40 Hp motors and restoring them to serviceability for resale at a small profit. This helps to pass the winter in Maine and I am having fun doing it!!!

Thanks to all again,

John

Great. I did the same with Ford 30-40 hp older farm tractors. Great way to pass the time and keep your motor skills up.
