Hello,

Does anyone know where I can get the lock for a 1990 Doral prestancia companion way door? The lock goes into the hole as shown below?

I am sooo happy I found this forum. Seems to be a wealth of info. I am going to follow in Chiefs footseps and order that piece that slides the companion way door. I hate to pay 67 bucks for a piece of plastic but I can see I need it....

Please if anyone knows about this lock and How I can obtain one please let me know. When I got the boat it did not have one. Pics below

Typical locks I have found don't fit or wont work based on Dorals locking mechanism
set up.

JLE815,

When you call the gentlemen for the Companionway door slides, ask him. His company built that door for Doral. He knew exactly what I needed when I called. If you need the number I will repost, I left it in a thread here in the Doral Boats section.

I must say that this forum is invaluable!!!!!! As someone said before, they learned more about their boat in a few days on this forum than they had in years of ownership.. Thanks to Chief915 I should hopefully have my new companionway lock in a weeks time. I have been without one for years. The gentleman at Bowman knew of the lock the part # and the manufacturer. The manufacturer is Abloy Locks. The original part number was #3427. The new part # which is the exact same dimensions as the original is OF420 which is still being made.

If you are in the states you can order one by dialing 800 657-5625 ask for Bruce and tell him you are looking for a OF420 in classic A... Whatever that means... In Canada there is a Montreal distributor.

Chief915 or anyone else in the know....

I got the lock It fits the hole... The issue is that the lock has two
bolt holes attached to it. I imagine they bolted the lock through the companionway
door to secure the lock into the door. My question is does the part of the lock
with the two holes sit on the inside part of the door IE the part of the door you see when you
are down below in the cabin as picture below shows (You can just barely see 1 bolt hole. Or does the part with the holes sit on top of the door (the part of the door you would see up on deck.... As you can see in picture 1 of this post above the original lock on mine may have been slightly different since there are no holes in my door where this lock could have been through bolted... Please advise on how your lock is oriented.
Secondly any precautions on drilling through this door material? I would hate to crack it.

Jason,

I am going to my boat in an hour or so to take delivery on all my cockpit seating, I will look at when I am down there and shoot you a note when I get home tonight. As far as drillin in the door, I would start out with a small pilot hole and work my way up.

Give you a shout this evening. I will also take a picture of how mine is mounted.

Jason,

This is how the lock is installed in my Prestancia. Obviously they have upgraded the lock since. If it were me, I would mount the base (side with holes) on the inside into the plastic with a pilot hole that is just slightly smaller than the screws.

Ah ha , okay so the lock is slightly different. I can make this work. Just for giggles I may ask abloy If there are two bases for this lock. The lock that was installed on my boat must have been like yours based on the hole pattern still left in the door. Thanks again I appreciate your help tremendously.

Tape both sides of the door with masking tape. Drill with low speed (between 350 and 1700 rpm) and low pressure. The door shouldn't be thick enough to need cooling (if it does use water).

Re: companion way door Lock 1990 Doral prestancia

Thanks for the Tip BSA flash... I recall an installer doing the same thing using tape when they moved my Stero into the Spot that the VHF occupies on most dorals. I use the stereo more often than the VHF so it made sense to swop the locations. Thanks to chief915s pics I have abloy looking into another lock with a base similar to chief915's so I may avoid drilling the door altogether.
