Comparing new engines HP & Torque Dyno tests?

Does anyone out there know where I can get HP and Torque Dyno results for new motors? I would like to compare Yamaha’s 150 4-stroke against Suzuki’s 175 to see if there is any significant difference, also if I could get a base line against my 200 oceanrunner that would be helpful. I know the dealers have max hp and torque numbers but, I would like independent full RPM range numbers to compare.

Re: Comparing new engines HP & Torque Dyno tests?

The new Evinrude brochure compares the hp curves and the torque curves of the 150 E-TEC and the F150 Yamaha.

These are dyno tested by ICOMIA standards used by every outboard manufacturer in the industry so they are accurate. Now you know where to find your Yamaha specs.

Very few other outboard companies have the guts to publish their dyno reports. The ones you see in the magazines or "dealer specs" are not accurate reports and are not performed on certified dynos like the manufacturers use.

Comparing a 150 with a 175 using a chart will not give you any meaningful information.

Just as a side note, I've been involved with a number of carbureted V6 repowers, such as your Oceanrunner, with Evinrude E-TECs of the same hp. Every owner reports using half the fuel, so much quieter, no smoke, and more power and performance.

Thanks for the reply. Are there any consumer groups out there checking this stuff?

I will not be considering the e-tech for this re-power.

Well, to each his own. E-Tec seems to be OK, alot less problems than Ficht had. Being a 2 stroke the Evinrude will out pull any 4 four stroke. Torque curves can be misleading and need to be interpreted with care. Pressure readings from most outboard/I-O dynos can really be misleading when used to compare different engines even if they are all rated the same hp.

On a few other message board people with the Suzuki's are VERY happy with the power output and Yamaha owners not so happy (in the 150hp+ range). Suzuki's 175 should hands down out perform the Yamaha 150 except in fuel use (it might even do that too, Suzuki's are really easy on gas). ALSO take a look at the E-tec, they have outgrown most of the "teething" problems now.

I went with the Suzuki 175's and I am slap happy! 3X fuel econ, and only lost 2 mph topend, added 10mph to cruse.

Thanks for the update, mac. Too often these discussions just end with no resolution.

Yeah, good follow-up.

I am curious, how'd you arrive at your new cruise speed? How is it 10 MPH faster? There is a cruise speed discussion in another section and I personally consider cruise speed as arbitrary unless there is some stated goal like: best economy, longest engine life, best compromise between the two, good speed & decent economy, even best ride of the hull . . .

This wasn?t an easy decision for me, as you can see it took 2 years!
I started with the 200hp Johnson v6 2 stroke motors and they worked fine, they pushed the boat 50.3 or so mph on a light load and liked to run 30mph at 4K RPM and 1mpg any more speed and it just started to hog fuel and scream like a banshee.

The new 175?s are fantastic, they push the boat 49mph, have way more hole shot and acceleration and I believe they will run a bit faster once they have a few hundred hours on them from what I have heard from other Zuki owners.

The new cruse speed comes from a SOP (seat of the pants) feel and the fuel motoring system. The boat gets its best econ still around 30mph. I get 3.05 mpg on a perfect day light and no crew. 2.85 with a load. But she really seems at home running 40mph and getting 2mpg.
