Just bought a new compass with a night light. Is there a male/female plug I can buy that will allow me to disconnect the compass at the plug so I can bring it indoors in the winter time without disconnecting it from the fuse panel? Or is that the only way.

I have never had a problem leaving them on the boat ?

There are a lot of plug sets like the ones for R/C car batterys at any hobby shop if you really feel the need :)

tommays

Won't the liquid in the compass freeze in the winter time?

The oil won't freeze but the plastic used in the compass construction may not tolerate extremely cold temperatures. The seal breaks and you have an oily mess. Been there -- done that. Radio Shack or the auto section at any department store (WalMart etc., and here on iBoats) can provide you with all sorts of male/female connectors. Nothing special is required.

Re: COMPASS NITE LITE WIRE

Had this happen to me 2 years ago after owning the boat for 8 years. Opened it up in the spring and noticed a big bubble in the compass, checked under the dash and sure enough there was an oily mess. Pulled the compass apart and the seal had let go in the bottom. Checked into a rebuild by the manufacturer (Ritchie Helmsman) but found a new one online at just slightly more. Still don't remove it though, I figured if the original one lasted 13 years (boat was 5 years old when I got it)the new one should last me until I'm done with it.

I can't say I've ever seen that happen. I don't think I would want a compass that breaks if the temperature dips below freezing. Seems pretty cheezy for such an illustrious manufacturer.

As with any mechanical device "stuff happens". In my case the oily mess was left on brand new carpet.
