I have looked on ebay for a control box for my 98 25hp johnson model #J25recb. there are many to choose from and some would be a really good deal if they would work on my outboard. problem is i am not sure which ones would work or if any one would work. I only need to control throttle and shifting. i would appreciate any insight on this thanks in advance. refractory148 :)

I think your best bet would be to talk to omc dealer,he can tell you what you need for that motor! then cruise ebay for part. Maybe it will even work!

Re: compatible control boxes

If you want to control just throttle & shift, any two-cable Johnson or Evinrude control box back to the mid-1950s will work, both single & double handle.

If you want to also be able to stop the motor (might be handy), or control the starter and choke...not sure which one you need. Does your motor have an electric start, and if so do you have an red plug under the hood, about 1" in diameter? If so, suspect any red plug Johnson/Evinrude control box (back to and including 1973) will work. Not sure, so check with dealer, or maybe someone else here knows better.

You will also want one with alarm system, 1988 or later.

Wiring changed in 96 on control boxes. If you have an 88 outboard then you would need a different harness for it to work on a 96 and newer. They sell like and adapter wiring at OMC dealers.
