compatible lower unit for 1987 yamaha 115hp

i have a 1987 yamaha 115 ETLH
with a cracked lower unit housing ( who doesn't ?)

assembly # 61U 45300 10 EK


will the lower unit from a 1998 yamaha 115 be compatible?
the assembly # is 6E5 45300 15 8D.

The part numbers are obviously different but the few threads found on this topic indicate that they may be interchangible.

does anyone know what specific differences may be found?

measure the shaft from the top of the shaft to the case mounting flange, if its the same then you will have to use the 95 and up water pump components due to the addition of the lock ring and collar from 95 up on the drive shaft.
