Compatible Lower Units

I froze my lower unit this winter. I would like to find a parts motor on ebay or craigslist and switch them out. What is the best way to find what outboards have compatible lower units? I have an old (1964?) Merc 500.

Keep your eye on ebay. New stuff gets added all the every day. Alot of the 60's style 500 lower units are going to be compatible. Most of the listings on ebay will tell you which ones it is going to fit. If you find one that is only a year or two off, it's almost for sure good to go.
