compression and price

I am thinking of buying a 1996 Tohatsu outboard 15 hp short shaft with remote that includes the cables and, control box and shift for $1,800.

Engine has very low hours and the compression test was 90 for both ends on a cold start after the engine has been sitting in the shop for a couple of years waiting for the right fit.

I have been told that the compression results are good since they are within 10% of each other and found that the mgf suggest perfect conditions to produce a 113 on each end.

Do you think this is a good deal and should I be concerned about the compression results? What other things should I look for?

Way overpriced....A 14 year old 15 wouldn't sell for more than $700.00.

I agree, it is very overpriced! I see those motors on craigslist all the time for as low as $400, it is not worth that much.

As far as the compression, I don't know what it should be, but I have a 1970's 8hp chrysler still putting out 130 pounds on each cylinder. So it seems a little low to me, but it might be alright.

Every gauge reads differently so the actual number isn't important. Just look for it being the same on both cylinders. Up to a 5 lb difference is fine. Ten lbs is acceptable. Fifteen indicates a problem.

I guess I thought it was too high as well. I think your saying 700 for an engine that old? Would you say more if it had really low hours and how much would you value the control box, cables and side mount shifter are worth?

I also am looking at a 2006 4 stroke 15 hp short shaft, elec start. Tiller control for 1900. Less than 20hrs. Is that a good deal and can I convert it to remote control action?

Who makes the 2006 motor? The motor can easily be converted if it has a place for the helm cable to screw to the motor. Also look for the same on the shifter handle.

A 2006 Tohastu sold new for about $2100.

Figure depreciation at 25% the first year and then 10% of the remaining value each year after that. That would make it somewhere between $1100-$1200 in value today. Or you can look at what engines are selling for in your market on any given day(the best method). Probably putting it into the $1400 -$1500 range. Here, in Tampa, a 2006 15 hp model anything would go for around a grand. Engine are dirt cheap in Florida due to a perpetual excess of availability. Converting a tiller to remote using the factory parts would run you at least $600.00.
