compression and starter on 2000 johnson 130 - j1300vxss (12/99)

I'm considering buying this engine however i have several concerns. I'm told the compression is 95 in each of the cylinders which seems low? The engine is supposed to have only 50hrs on it. Also the starter has been replaced twice already??A two yr.warranty is being offered.I am new to boating, any comments and or suuggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. newbie04

i assume 2 yr warranty on just starter? what about the rest of the engine?<br /><br />i would be very careful, see my post 2001 johnson lower unit. <br />i bought with supposedly under 50 hrs. i already rebuilt lower unit once and it just broke again. 2 lower units and i haven't used the boat more than 15 times!!! even though boat and motor looked brand new i was screwed. i would have done better to buy new.

95 does sound a little low, but not unacceptable, and its very possible the compression guage is off a little too.<br />The starter is a concren though. something may be amiss and causing a bind on the starter. Corroded cables and connection can cause excess heat, prolonged cranking can cause excess heat. These are all something to look at as to why the starter has gone out twice.

We are hijacking this thread. Very unfair to the original poster.<br /><br />My apologies to newbie.<br /><br />Newbie, 95 is in the ballpark. As said, maybe a little low. Most likely that can be explained. Throttle not open, slow cranking speed, etc.<br /><br />The most important thing is that they are consistant.

i didn't bash or proclaim all 2001 johnson's are bad. see my other threads for further details.<br /><br />if anyone is stretching its you to assume that i "proclaim all 2001 johnsons are bad"
