Just got my 1986 Merc out of the shop. Broken shift shaft and new motor mounts. The boat shop I take my boat to always does a compression check on every visit.

Here are my results:

Cylinder 1 = 150
Cylinder 2 = 160

Are these acceptable numbers? I don't know what the numbers were new or what they should be.

Thanks.

Re: Compression on Merc 35

Thanks OB! I didn't have a clue to what they should be.

Does anyone know what they are new? I'm trying to figure out if this motor will last a while with proper maintenance. (I know that is a stupid question because of too many factors, but theoretically speaking).

What is the lowest number on compression I should be concerned with.

I have to make this motor last as I can't afford another one! :D

Kelton, All motors will vary slightly when new , however you can be assured that the reading of 160 is in the upper range of good.165-170 is common for new motor once rings have been properly seated.

Thanks. looks like with some TLC, I should be able to keep this thing running for a while!
