Compression Readings?

Hey there.

I took my 1983 15hp to a shop at the end of the season last year and they said it needs a thermostat (I had been thinking that too) and they said my compression was a low.

I just checked it with the way to described to in the Secret File, and I have exactly 100psi in both cylinders.

Is this too low? I need to use to motor to troll with, can it troll fine with those readings?

Thanks.

Nothing I would worry about.

Decarb her and see if she comes up some, but nothing to worry about.

100 psi on a motor that late is pretty darned good. Take good care of it and it will last you for years. :D

Ok good thanks!

Now next big question, does anyone have a good link(pictures would help) to a thermostat change?

Re: Compression Readings?

That one probably has the thermostat housing at the bottom of the head. :(

It's not easy to work with, but just remove the 9 bolts that hold the water cover on and you'll find the thermostat. You might find it easier to replace, with the hood latch removed and out of your way.
I had an 84 model once and it was a job to replace it, without doing so. In the picture attached, you'll see the water cover that you need to remove, to get to the thermostat. There will be either 5/16" or 3/8" hex on those bolts. The larger hex, of course are your head bolts, so don't remove those. The thermostat goes in the round portion at the bottom.

In the later years, they put it on the top portion of the head.

1946 Zephyr, you have been a hUGE help. Thanks Alot!

I seen how it is tight to work back there.

Do I take the water cover off first, then undo the latch bolt?

Or wrestle the latch bolt off first?

Waht should I torque the water cover bolts down too when putting it back together?
