compression relief valve question for a rds 22 1960 40 hp johnson

i hope some one can help me R.johnson sent me two new valves on my old ones one has a o ring on the stem like a seal but the new ones he sent me dont have the o ring dont know if needs it and what there are made of because the one valve that still has one it is hard as a rock the one that is missing one it broke and fell of like brunt hard plastic turned in to dust i call a local boat dealer she said she did not have any she told me to go to a auto parts store or a hardwere store my guess is it would be soft rubber or it would never slide over the top the stem does it need it and what do i have to get so i know for sure hope someone can help????
