Compromise with wife on a boat

Hi all,
I have to compromise with the wife and will get a searay 180 sport. I wanted a fishing boat, but it will do. I like to do some fishing, but don't want to stink up the boat. I can get in some serious trouble if me and the boys stink up the boat. I would image we can have a cooler setup just drop the fish in there. There is no carpet in the boat so will a wash down pretty much solve the problem? I can see us planning a morning fishing trip and the wife and the inlaws will come up for some water activity in the after noon. Any recommendation on keeping the boat fish stinky free would be appreciated.

Re: Compromise with wife on a boat

I was in a similar situation a few months ago...The Searay was in my top 3, but I liked the Glastron MX 175 a little better and it was cheaper. It is very simple in design (easy cleanup), has bench seat, and has a great resale value.

I ended up deciding on a 2005 Sea Pro center console 180 with an outboard motor for the same price. I got the rugged and a much more durable salt water fishing boat with rod holders, gobs of storage, livewell, 4 built in coolers, and an outboard (i/o motors draft about 2.5 feet making shallow water tricky...raising outdrive on i/o kinks ujoint and causes damage)

My wife got comfy snap-on leather cushions, swim platform, large bench seating, and comfy bow cushion. This makes pleasure boating and water sports much more enjoyable.

Remember that the i/o motor takes a lot away from the 18' boat and you still have to find a place for the beverage cooler and the mother in law.

Consider a comfy center console/dual console fishing boat or open bow that has and outboard. As far as fish stink, just scrub it and you will be fine.

I hear ya nightvision, sometimes I have that kind of "compromise" with the missus, too. You say fishing boat, she says pleasure boat, and look what you end up with. :)

No carpet = no problem. Just make sure "the boys" understand that stinky boat = cold shower for nightvision (if you know what I mean and I think you do). ;)

Put the catch on ice, live or cut bait is another potential source of odors - a separate cooler for that is a good idea. A washdown pump might be a good investment for a mid-day transition from fishing vessel to partybarge. If you are careful to remove all traces of organic matter at the end of the day you shouldn't get any lingering odors.

A lot of otherwise normal males are quite particular about keeping their boats shipshape so don't worry about "the boys" thinking you're getting soft.

have fun, and don't forget the plug!

Freshly caught fish have no odor. Leave em, or their blood sitting out in the hot sun and then the odor starts.

Fish never leave a lingering odor if (1) you never break the skin, (2) you hand net them right into the iced cooler (remove hook there) and (3) leave your gloves in the cooler between catches. Or, get a 4 foot transom platform and fish on/from the platform. I assume your catches won't exceed 30 inches. And, get an airosol can of perfumed deodorant.

Lemon juice or vinegar spraydown will get rid of the odors pretty rapidly.

Ken

If you install a washdown pump using seawater (with a through hull fitting) you can rinse it out while on the water and before any blood or mess has a chance to dry. A cheaper way would be a plastic bucket. ;)

Every boat is a compromise one way or another. Enjoy, be happy and the fish smell is easy to deal with. Good advice above, and its good that you were smart enough to include your wife in the decision. She'll come around to a fishing boat ;) when its time to upgrade.

Keep a gallon of bleach on board. take just a cup or so and distribute on the deck. Use outside water to wash down. Bilge pump takes care of the rest. If that doesn't work then take mattttt25's advice.
