Computer Memory Question

I picked up a dead eMachines computer, the third unit with a bad motherboard, the online specs called for PC2100 memory chips but it had a PC2700 installed. I removed the PC2700 512mb chip and installed it in another PC2100 computer and it works perfectly and passes all the Norton Diagnostics memory tests. Now the question, is this normal, and what's the difference between PC2100 and PC2700 chips other than price? Thanks.

The difference is speed, the ram will clock back to match the speed of the motherboard.The difference? ... ddr2100 runs at 266mhz ddr2700<br />runs at 333mhz ddr 3200 runs at 400mhz ...<br /> So, YES, it is normal.

And those diagnostics don't mean squat! Bad chips will (and do) pass the test/s

Hi vipzach & rwise, thanks for the information. So the only gain is memory size, currently has 256mb. If the chip works and the computer doesn't crash one can only assume the memory is okay. Live and learn,

If you only have 256 mb right now then adding the 512 stick will bring you up 768 mb. You should notice a difference in how your computer runs. Faster is always better in a computer! If it is in there and working fine, leave it there! You can benefit from it.
