Computer Motor Check?

I noticed on another thread a poster recommended having a mechanic do a computer check on a motor to determine the total hours and percent of time spent at WOT. If this can be done, can all later model outboards be checked? Would this be an in shop check or do portable devices exist?

Re: Computer Motor Check?

That check can be performed only on late model ECM controlled motors and even then, the parameters that can be checked may not be the same between manufacturers. You need the manufacturers software in most cases to read this data. Suzuki four strokes however can provide a run-time read out using the tach.
