Computer Networking and the Internet

I have two computers, one Windows 2000 Professional and one XP Professional.
I have a 2-Wire DSL modem for the internet.
I want to use the XP computer as the main computer, but I want it isolated from the internet right now.
I would like it to be able to access the internet eventually.
I want to network the 2000 computer to the XP and I want the 2000 to be on the internet.
The modem has outlets for multiple computers. I've had three connected for internet in the past, but not networked.
( We'll forget the Windows 98 computer for now. It's a dinosaur the kids use for games and homework. )

So I guess my question is, can I use the 2-Wire modem as a router and isolate one computer from the internet with the other connected to the internet? If not, what do I need?

My problem is the XP has a little hard drive that is about full with software and sensitive long-term data. I want to be able to use the XP computer for running programs because it's faster, but I'd like to access the less-sensitive transient data and software from the 2000 which has a slightly larger drive with room to spare. I'd also like to access data and software from the XP and use it on the 2000. But mostly I need the XP isolated from the internet for now.

Yeah, I know. Clear as mud. ;)

Is this the 2-wire brand deal that lets you share an internet connection with multiple computers over your house telephone lines instead of ethernet?

Bellsouth had that for a while. It was an abomination and they soon pulled the product.

Well, it depends on the model of 2Wire box you have. They have models with wireless routing, some with only router functions. You could log into the 2Wire and see what options are offered. If you have more than one port (RJ45), it probably has router functions. In the firmware settings, see if there's an option to block certain computers from the web based on MAC address, this will do nicely for your situation, just deny access to the web on the XP box.

You can turn on file and printer sharing (for both computers) and disable the TCP/IP binding for the file shares. Use NetBEUI protocol for the file sharing. Tip: NetBEUI isn't transportable over the net, so your shares are protected from snoops outside of your network.....

If the 2Wire box doesn't offer the options you need, you could disable the DHCP function (disables routing) making it just a DSL modem and add your own router. Your new router should be chosen based on firmware options to do what you need (want)....like limiting certain computers from having web access etc....

Like you said.....Yeah, I know. Clear as mud.:$
