I just reloaded Windows XP Pro, and My computer will not find my display adapter! I cant get it to find it no matter what I do! It wont load the driver without me finding it first to show it where to load! It does not show up in the device manager, (no display adapter at all)Its not in program files! I even pulled it and reseated it hopeing that windows would recognise it that way, but NNNOOOO! Wizard wont help and It is not listed in the display devices in windows so that I can install it that way! HHHHEEEELLLPPPP!!!!!!<br /><br />Hasbeen

has been you should have a driver disk with that to look and see if you can find it on the load disk

Don't know, but if you turn everything off and then turn monitor on and then computer, won't it see it then?<br />I was thinking it work something like that.<br />May not on XP though.<br /><br />Oh well what do I know? NOTHING.

Is the Bios on your motherboard set to recognize plug and play?<br />If it's not, then maybe that's why.<br /><br />There are also other BIOS settings that may cause that. <br />Typically when I do a fresh install, I also reset the bios for a nice clean start.<br /><br />Getting the drivers directly from the Video card manufacturer will help too. Win XP has basic drivers, and works to a point, but if you have a custom card, you need the right drivers.<br /><br />Also, are you logged in XP as the administrator?<br />If you aren't, you basically can't install anything (so I understand)... XP is very anal about this. <br /><br />H.

Hasbeen,<br /><br />1) Load the standard default driver so you can at least get on line with the computer.<br /><br />2) Go to the manufacturer's web site and look for support/downloads.<br /><br />3) Download the driver for your video card<br /><br />4) After it is downloaded and extracted and install it. If you don't know how and there are no instructions on the mfg website, post again and I'll walk you through it

Evidently Im not making myself clear! I have the ATI Radeon 7500 driver and install disc, but it will not load it because the computer says everywhere I look that this vidio card doesnt even exhist!! Ive NO problems loading other programs, done it a hundred times and know how to install drivers a dozen different ways! I just need to find the device on the computer so that I can load the drivers for it! You cannot load a driver for a peice of hardware that is not there! Its just vanished into thin air for some reason and I cant get the computer to recognise that it is there! Its the same one Ive had in the computer for a year now! Im on the computer in question at this moment using a default video that the computer uses automaticaly when you are first booting before you load drivers for your installed video card!<br /><br />Hasbeen

Right. All you have to do is go to the device manager, select the display adapter, select chang driver, have disk, point to them and change to your card.<br /><br />The other option is to use the "Add new hardware" wizard and choose the path that allows you to manually load them - something like, selct from list, video card, have disk, etc

NO, NO, NO, You still do not understand!!! When I go to device mngr, There is no display adapter, It dosnt even say display adapter anywhere, I cant find it anywhere you would normally look!! I know how to do all of that, but that is what I mean by it beeing lost! No, I do understand but am just trying to help you. This is only the 5,000 time I have faced this problem.<br /><br />Did you try the add new hardware manager and work through it manually (don't let it find the HW but pick from the list)? You can add hardware that way even when it does not show up in device manager (if the default driver is loaded, which it must be for you to see anything at all on the screen, it usually still shows up in device manager with the default driver loaded) Clearly it sees your card and your card is working or you would see nothing at all on the screen.<br /><br />If you can't even do it that way, pull the card, blow out the connector on the mother board with some compressed air, re-seat the card and try again. Be sure to unp[ug the computer completely to allow all the ICs to discharge completely and reset.

Been there, done all of that, Its not there and it wouldnt pick it up after rebooting! I know, It should show when you start the computer as found new hardware, but it dosent! Ok, did you do this:<br /><br />1) control panel, add new HW<br /><br />2) "yes I have already connected the HW"<br /><br />3) Bottom of list, "Add a new HW device"<br /><br />4) "Install the HW that I manually select from a list"<br /><br />5) "Display adapters"<br /><br />6) "have disk"<br /><br />Then pick the card when it gets displayed.<br /><br />If you have done all that. Time to unplug computer, open case, pull card, dust, reseat, retry<br /><br />If it still does not work. You can then reformat and reinstall XP from scratch assuming the installation corrupted. If it still does not work, then the advanced functions of your card may have died and time for a new video card<br /><br />PS - if when you say "have disk" and card does not display on the list, are you sure that disk has XP drivers?<br /><br />XP also at times will not show drivers that are not digitally signed. You may want to download the latest signed drivers from the mfgs web site.

Yes, been there, done that! I just do not understand why in dosnt even show didplay adapter in the device manager! Too weird!<br /><br />Thanks for the help! Just before your last post I unplugged the VC and went to the bathroom , brushed my teeth hoping that would be enough time! Plugged it back in and nothing to be found, I do not understand why it dosnt show as found new hardware?? It was working fine before I ran the repair program!!<br /><br />Your right, It is working, I just cannot load the right drivers for it now because I cant find it!<br /><br />Ray

What I just described does not have anything to do with the DM - it has only to do with the drivers loaded on the disk you have. When you went through the process I just outlined and you selected "have disk" at the end, what cards did it show? If there are any XP video drivers at all on that disk they should show up (with the digitally signed possible exception) Des it say "can't find any drivers" or what?

OK the XP drivers aren't on the disk or you may not be navigating to the right folder on the disk. If they were there they would show up because all it is doing is reading what is available on the disk regardless of what is actually installed.<br /><br />Go the mfg web site and download the xp drivers and put them (extracted) on a floppy or folder on your HD and go through that process again. That should do it.

The drivers are on the disk, I used them when I installed the video card! I can run the instalation program with out any problem, but it says that the vidio card isnt there to load to! Thats the main problem! I can even find the file, but it wont load! There is nothing for it to identify with!!<br /><br />Going to bed! Well if the install program on the disk isn't working either the card died (unlikely coincidence) or when you ran the repair program it FUBARed your OS. If I were you, at this point, I would first try re-running the repair program, then windows update. If still no luck, I'd save my data, reformat and install XP from scratch. Something got corrupted.

I agree witrh Ralph. Couple of notes.<br /><br />1. You should see a list of drivers no matter if you have an ATI video card or Triton. What is installed in the machine does not matter. If it does not show a list, then the drivers are in another directory on the disk or are not on there at all.<br /><br />2. XP has specifically been written to not accept driver install programs. IT has it's own installer so drivers cannot overwrite other drivers and cause operating system instability. Yes there are some exceptions.<br /><br />3. Start in safe mode. After your POST (Power On Self Test)(memory count) hit the F8 key. A start menu will show up and let you get into safe mode. Then go to the Device manager and remove your video card from the list. If it does not show up, then your XP install or your video hardware is hosed. XP install most likely. <br />Note: Before you do this, Dowload the latest drivers and expand them to a directory on your hard drive and load them from there.<br /><br />4. I would still download the newest drivers from the ATI site and try this. If this doesn't work, use the repair utility. If that does not work, save data and start from scratch. <br />Note: if you loaded XP over Win 98 or another operating system, it may not work. While it tries, sometimes, there is too much junk for it to work properly.
