Con-Rod question

I have benn working on a frozen 3 Cyl. 50HP Merc. (1998). I have disasembled the power head and utilizing quite a bit of 'Release All' and Heat, have managed to free everything up. Problem is, I used a mild metal cleaner to remove the rust from the #3 Connecting Rod. This procedure cleaned everything up, although the metal cleaner also removed the cromium(?) finish on the con rod.....is this a problem?...can I simply replace the roller bearing assembly and re-assemble or do I have to replace the Rod also?. (Rods are kind of expensive).

Rcb

Yep, yep and yep. Would you buy that motor with that rod in it?

Re: Con-Rod question

Replace the comparatively cheap rod now or the comparatively expensive powerhead later. If the rod lets go, it'll likely take the crank and block with it, leaving you with nothing...
- Scott
