I am finishing the work on my Evinrude 175 hp 1978. Model # 175849C

Any way I rebuilt lower unit, control box, and pulled the head for a complete decarbonization with new gaskets.

Now all put back together and started on garden hose. Engine sounds rough, Knocking it seems. Is this common when restarted after having heads off? Or did I cause more damage then I wanted to with the decarbonization. I want to go out and run it a bit to see if lubrication might help with the knock, but am concerned, don't want to be stranded out in the middle if this thing blows. I don't have auxillary motor. Any thoughts will be appreciated. and thanks for all the help.

Steury Carl

Re: Concerned

I hate to say this, but pull the heads again, just to be sure there isn't something in the jug. That can't be good. You didn't remove the flywheel, did ya?
If so, make sure the key is all the way in the keyway, and the flywheel is tight.

Re: Concerned

Thanks for the reply 12footer.

No, didn't remove fly wheel. Will remove heads again tomorrow, it appears I won't be out on the lake this weekend anyway. So anything specific to look for. Last time was pretty clean.

Thanks again
Carl
