I need to be in contact with someone who knows this particular block and what specific holes should be inside this water cavity - especially those 2 holes highlighted in this picture.

Any contacts/links you can provide me would be great.

And, what type of welding needs to be used on this block to weld back a broken thread piece shown in this picture?

Currently 10mm of thread remains from the original 20mm length of thread.

If you look at the BRP website drawings it sort of shows that the top hole is supposed to be there but I'm not 100% sure of the other one.
Maybe someone here has an old V4 laying around and will check for you.

the general answer for the welding is TIG. The entire piece of metal should be preheated prior to the welding.
as to the holes.... they look stock... rare for corrosion to burn concentric holes and square in relation to everything else, but i do not have a block to compare it to. I was just offered a pair of 115s... and a free boat and trailer to go with em for $300.... and passed... couldn't think of what i would do with them.
Good luck, hoping this bump will keep you near the top... and you'll get a better answer.

thanks Sean,

When I hold that broken piece, it feels very light, almost like plastic...just a little concerned about what any amount of heat may do to this bit...

In your opinion, do you think that piece needs to be welded back in any case?

THanks for info on the holes..

yes it should be welded back in my opinion

cheap insurance to the rest of your work.
maybe best to have a machine shop do it then they can rethread it as well... because when welded up they will pretty much fill the entire hole with weld and then redrill and retap it.
you may get off cheaper if you have a drill press, and can locate the hole prior to having it welded up.. so that you can redrill it afterwords. just remember aluminum needs absolutely every thread it can get.... it is a soft weak metal.

thanks SEan.

so, that little piece that is broken off - do not weld that back.

rather - fill up the existing thread with weld and re-tap it?

would extreme heat generated by the weld affect the zones behind this water cavity at all?

and, can the hole be welded with block still on boat as a motor with gas still around (such as the carbs and fuel tank nearby)?

is it safe basically?

in order to weld it up.... you would have to weld up to the threads,,,this would destroy the threads anyhow.
no dont weld next to gas tanks.
ask the welding/machine shope what they would suggest and how much it will cost.

Both of those holes in the picture were cast into the block at the factory. They are normal.
