This is my first post, and I love the forum. I have a 1987 70 HP Johnson and have about 3/32 of upward play in the crankshaft, no side play what so ever. I have searched this topic here and found alot of info but no definitive answers. I have read countless posts and some say its ok and some say the motor is toast. Good night I am more confused than ever now. Is there a certain amount of acceptable play? Thanks.

Re: confused about allowable play in crankshaft

Crankshaft end-play is a product of the lower crank ball bearing wear. 3/32 does sound a little on the high side. It certainly doesn't mean the engine is shot. The lower bearing is fairly easy to change. I have changed several when rebuilding, but never seen one actually fail. Something else usually gives in first!
