Yesterday I went on my first fishing trip of the season. Catch was a sand shark, two small flatties and the mystery fish. All of which were released.
I was drifting in the Delaware Bay and there were schools of fish at the surface with hundreds of fins above the surface and sometimes even jumping out of the water. There were no gulls following the schools but I didn't think anything of it at the time. Since they appeared fairly aggressive I assumed bluefish and threw whatever I had into the school. Squid strips, live minnows and even a diamond jig but they wouldn't bite. I could feel them running into the lure but nothing would bite. I hooked one on the diamond jig that was on a bass rod with braided line and ended up losing the jig and figured the fish bit it off. At one point I did manage to catch one as I foul hooked it and again I assumed it was a bluefish but the fins were yellow. I haven't fished in a long time so I may have forgotten what a weakfish looks like but the more I look at pictures, the more I think it might have been a weakie.
My question is, does the behavior of swimming in large schools at the surface but not necessarily feeding point towards it being a weakie rather than a blue? The more I think about it the more I want to say it was a weakie but I've heard that they've been hard to catch in this area which has me leaning more towards a blue.
