ok on water today previously was fine but i was in real rough water and maby not . ok took off at about 1200 rpm till warm up and no wake area past and proceeded to come up on plane accellerated to 3000 and just as boat came to plane it eithr kicked outta gear or prop spun engine reved a nd no load tried this 3 times same issue what r ur thoughts . it is a 17 ft boat thu hull and a merc 120 4cyl 83 vintage alpha one outdrive thanks 4 ur help

To determine which it is, remove the prop, mark across the inner hub and the prop, reinstall and run. If the marks move out of alignment, it's the prop. If not, it's the coupler.

I vote for the prop.

ok pulled prop looks good and tight .re installed and put in gear stood on it in reverse and in forward its tight no mpvement can turn engine both ways . is it a possibillity shift linkage not going in gear far enough or throttle lever as i push forward goofing ill ck linkage today as i remember when it happend not to overrev i throttled back and hag to put back in gear to proceed or r gears worn ?? . ill rest adjustments today on shifter and see if it feels loose as per shift settings on here thanks

Standing on the prop is not a true test, when things are under way they get hot, and stuff happens. Did you mark the prop as the 3 previous posters mentioned? then taken it out to try it, to see if it's slipping? That's really the only way to know.

You have to mark the prop hub and run it hard until you feel it slip then check the marks..It may look fine and the hub still be bad.
When the coupler goes you sometimes smell a burnt rubber smell out of the engine bay..
Test the prop again the right way.....

ok thank u ill do that prop test thurs as im off again . its marked and on . i also checked the shift linkage adjustment and followed instructions on here everything seams according to spec and tight im almost sure its the prop ill see thurs thanks for ur input

Really need to get this identified. if it is the prop, just replace it. but, if it is the coupler, it gets more complex, with engine and drive removal. Plus you will also not have any cooling water flowing when it slips.

If the coupler was smoked, you would overheat....
Get a new prop or have your hub redone, there is no way to see a bad hub, other than the tests outlined above....

ok i went out in the rain tosay and put her in the water and warmed up well cruised thu the wake zone and gradually accellerated and low and behold my gremlin was gone came right up on plane and took off made a few turns and went to full throttle as all was well and no misshap . i came to a stop and accelerated a few more times and at last full bore from stop all worked well . now came in pulled prop and nothin moved at all . the only thing i can think is on the shif cable i made a slight maby 1/8 in adjustment and added a washer to take slop outta the steady pin holding it .prior to the throttle coupling maby it wasnt all the way in gear and loose and popped out dont know just thanks 4 ur help and advice if i can help at any time let m know jack

oh i did spend two plus hrs on the water puttin it thru its paces and it runs well 4 an old girl
