I just repowerd with a 86 50 'rude, on a 18 lowe pontoon, 2 questions, 1. should this motor have a reverse lock out, it raises out of water in reverse. I feel this could be dangerous, in any situation. I read that this shouldn't be locked, in case of striking any underwater hazards, the motor would tilt up. I've had several Mercury in the past I believe they were set to raise in the event of a hazard, but wouldn't tilt up in reverse. 2. When starting even after reaching operational temp, the only way of starting is to use cold start procedure, everytime, runs out fine except idleing thoughts and thanks.

Re: confused?

It has a lock to hold it down. And it should be run with it locked down. There is an automatic release built in that will overpower and release the lockdown if you hit something. Saying all this to say it is a different ball game if you have power tilt/trim.

EDIT: The lock lever is on the port side, near the stern brackets. Has a black plastic knob. Rotate it upward to manually tilt the motor, swing it down to lock it down. From your view from in the boat, it will say "Lock" or "Release" according to position.

EDIT, EDIT: If you don't believe it will automatically release, lock it down, then hunker down behind the motor, grab hold of the lower unit and give a mighty yank to the rear. It will give a loud bang that will scare the bejabbers out of you and come on up. Don't worry, you didn't break anything.

F R,

Would an 83 Evinrude have that same release feature?

OK then, what if my motor HAD power Tilt & Trim, but was removed for what ever reason, can this lock be purchased and installed. I don't see any sign of it, but I have a T&T button on the control handle.

Re: confused?

OK, that explains it. The parts are removed or disabled when PT & T is installed because the hydraulics take over the function. Go to Evinrude and pick out the missing stuff and check availability and/or order it.
