Confusion about orientation of Alpha One Gen I bottom seal in upper housing

I'm swapping an Alpha One Gen I for the chronically water-logged 165 outdrive on my boat. I've got the input shaft swapped and the new water pump installed in the lower. The last thing to do besides mounting upper and lower to the boat is to replace the bottom seal in the upper unit, the one that sits just below the vertical driveshaft's splines.

I'm confused about the orientation of this seal (this is the Mercruiser part, not aftermarket). The #6 manual says to install it with the lip facing upwards. I find lip direction ambiguous, so I'll call it "spring side" and "face" side. Is there better terminology? I assume that "lip upwards" means spring side upwards.

The old disintegrated one was installed spring side facing upwards, towards the splines/gearing. I've found other posts here and elsewhere that seem to confirm that. However, the only YouTube video I could find (by Wayne Coll) shows the spring side down, facing away from the upper gearbox.

I've always understood that the spring side goes towards the fluid, and that this seal is a water seal intended to keep water out of the spline area. In that case spring outwards makes sense.

I'm confused...
