CONFUSION on Merc / Yamaha models to choose (again same boring question)

Dear people, boat lovers!
I am looking at a boat (Aquamar: Vulcanissimo) that is 4,3 m long (6,9 foot) and can have max. 40 HP engine. More I read about 2-stroke vs. 4-stroke engines, more confused I get. I think that 4-stroke Mercury or Yamaha could be good choice. I can use my boat only in summer time in Croatia for 2 mounth. For the rest of the time, the boat and engine will stay in a garage. When ppl. talk about advatages /disadv. of 4-stroke, they don't talk about costs of repairs.
If my boat can have max. 40 HP, does that mean 40 HP of any engine (4-stroke is more heavy)? If any of you guys had unlimited money, which choice would you take as the best 40 HP engine (with trim (?lifts motor out of water?))? For example Mercury.
Thank you very much. I hope for any replys.

I think 2 stroke will survive stowage better than 4 stroke for numerous reasons. Yammie or Merc in that hp range is probably a toss up. Up at 90 hp I would definitely take the Merc because of cubic inches of displacement of the engine.

As mentioned on here, a good dousing of Sea Foam/Deep Creep spray will keep the innards from rusting. They tell you how to do it, and recover the next season.

Need to drain the fuel, AKA run the fuel out of the engine, and a new water pump impeller would probably be in the offering every second year along with a thermostat if the engine has one.

When you run the fuel out be sure and have the lower unit in water of some kind or put ear muffs on it and the garden hose to insure that the impeller is lubricated and won't burn up.

Then when you go to use it, drain the lower unit oil and add new. No biggie, no problem to do, no real expense, but could save you from some problems.

We have a big problem here with dirt dobbers and spiders filling every hole they can find with their eggs, so I'd seal the whole thing in plastic to keep these critters (and mice that eat wiring and hoses) out.....if you have similar problems. Would help to keep moisture out too which is always a problem.

HTH

Mark

My take is to go with the 4 stroke here. I favor traditional two strokes in the portable motor sizes, but with a 40 that will stay on, I'd go four stroke. Smooth, quiet, smoke free operation and better fuel economy too.

As far as extra maintenance goes on the four stroke, all you really have more is an oil change every year. No biggy.

(I really like the Evinrude ETEC two stroke, but you are asking about Yammie or Merc.)

evinrude.com/en-CA/Engines/2005/E-Tec/In.Line.60.50.40/

Thanks a lot for your opinions and hornest thoughts.

If I get new engine, I will get book with it end read all about conservation for the rest of the year I'm not using it.

But problem still remains: if you had unlimited money to spend on 40 HP 4-stroke, what model is the best? With trim, injecton, etc. Mercury F40 ELPT, EFI (what is EFI?)? What Yamaha could be the same kind? What IS the best for my use during the summer. Fishing, crusing and water sports for 60 days, every day. Rest of the year is in garage, but not on the boat. Any suggestions?

Thanks for a quick reply again.

EFI = electronic fuel injection. Go Merc for the EFI. Much better than the (3)three carbs to fool around with on the Yamaha.

Yamaha:

yamaha-motor.ca/products/products.php?model=1923&section=td&group=O#contentTop

If you are going 4 stroke (and I don't understand why) but if you are, look really hard at the Honda 40 4 stroke. My Dad has one, and that thing is so quiet and it runs fantastic. No problems at all in five years.

40 lbs isn't much.

I would determine how you are planning on using your boat. Is it fishing(trolling), cruising, or water sports, etc.?

Which dealer is closest to you for service if and when you need it ...or will you be doing things by yourself?

There really aren't any bad motors out there from the main manufacturers (Evinrude, Honda, Mercury, Tohatsu/Nissan, Yamaha, Suzuki, Johnson).

If you list the things that are most important to you in order of importance, it will be easier to help you determine which motor will be best for your needs.

You are right Cobra.

I need boat just to go sightseeing, cruising aroung. When I fish, I stop the motor and fish. When I get to small beautifull islands, I stop the motor at nice spot and go swimming. Unfortunately, the space where I hold my old boat (4,3 m x 1,35 m) in the little marine infront of my house (it's an island) don't have much space anymore, so I have too look for a new boat that is not to wide. I found one Aquamare: Vulcanissimo or Marinello: Gabbiano (open). I need any good new engine. I have an old 2-stroke Yamaha (maybe from 1970-ies) that still works every time, but uses TOO much gas (nothing to do about at service shop). Every little trip get expencive. There are all engine services around (if needed) on the main land. Off course, it would be easyer if engine don't weight too much, if I have to handle it to the service place. On the other hand, 4-stroke is supposed to save a lot in gas! I don't how efficiant are new 2-stroke.

I have a friend who have 30 HP Honda (4-stroke), and another have 30 HP Yamaha (2-stroke). They are both happy. I know a guy that works at Yamaha service personaly. Maybe thats good.

Anyway, I belive that all those engines are good. I just CAN NOT make up my mind between 2-stroke and 4-stroke. If I could read somhere about 2 vs. 4 fuel usage, that might help.

Why isn't there a web site that have all major engines compared to each other?

Thank you all for writing.

What is the difference between 3 and 4 cylinders?

Stupid question? I guess.

What is better. 4? Mercury F40 ELPT has 4, and Yamaha F40 BETL with 3.

Hmmm.

I'd go with the Evinrude Etech. It's a 2 stroke that is as smooth, economical, and smoke free as the four stroke... Maintenance is simpler and it weighs less than any four stroke. They are a little pricier than some four strokes...but money is no object! Right?

http://www.brp.com/en/Products/Evinrude/Showroom/ETEC40.htm

If you know the guy that works at Yamaha personally, that's where I'd buy. Service will be the only issue with any of the models mentioned and if you already know the guy who will do it, your in the black already....

Re: CONFUSION on Merc / Yamaha models to choose (again same boring question)

I belive, after all, that Yamaha is the lightest and quite good engine with some special features (like a posibility to flush motor with plain water by connecting a wather hose to engine without turning the engine on). Mercury is good with EFI option.
All the new engines have simmilar advantages and some differences.

Well, I quess I'll go for Yamaha F40BETL.

Thank you all for replys and suggestions.

Greetings, Mateo.

Time to go fishing and cruising soon!!!

Yeah that Evinrude is kind of heavy! I hadn't seen that. It's the same size and weight as their 60.

Yamaha is a great choice too. Come to think of it, a fellow just got one on our lake last summer (with the tiller handle) on a large aluminum boat. It sure sounds smooth and seems to have all the power he needs when he drags his kids around on their tube/biscuit.

Good luck and enjoy!
