I have a 1966 40hp evenrude twin
I gave my 1965 a make over...Disconected cables to motor after painting put back think the same.
Have a junction box I did disconect the power supply cable in the junction box.Have a electric
starter .. has a key to start

I co to connect battery cable it sparks & motor starter begins to start motor.
I have a picture in my photos in Yahoo Starcraft boats group. Will try to post that info. Re: Connect batery & motor starts ..Help

Logical reasoning:

1) The ignition (switch) maybe bypassed from line to load side due to spaghetti wiring or misplaced wire. In this case the ignition is useless. Trace the wire from the solenoid to the ignition. There shouldn't be any splices anywhere along the wire. If no splices wiring is good.

2) With the key in off position, check continuity between solenoid wire and positive lead at battery (make sure cable is disconnected from battery). If you get a reading, the ignition maybe bad. repeat the test with the key in the start position (have someone hold the key in start position). If you get a reading regardless what position the ignition is in, problem solved. To be safe make sure #1 checked out before making this conclusion.

Let us know the result of the test when you get a chance.

I replaced the solenoid and the ignition switch

still connect battery , starter trys to start if did not disconnect would just keep running
I'm lost on what to do
by the way I have no meter a friend help me He lost on what to do as well. I called a boat yard they said solenoid thats why put it in
Helpppppppppp

You have the positive cable from the battery connected to the wrong terminal on the starter solenoid. Reverse the two cables on the two large solenoid posts.

Re: Connect batery & motor starts ..Help

Sorry -- my fingers were going faster than my brain this morning. My previous post is erroneous. What you do have is the 12V going to the small terminal on the solenoid that would normally be entergized by the ignition switch. That terminal should have only one wire on it and it should only carry 12V with the key in the START position. If the solenoid has two small terminals, the second terminal should be connected to ground (the engine block). The positive battery cable should connect to one of the large posts on the solenoid. The other large post should connect to the starter. I don't think that engine has a charging system so there should be no other connections to the solenoid.

Re: Connect batery & motor starts ..Help

To Mr. Upinsmoke ...All the wires are in a junction box ..they where there when the motor ran. So can not see why would not run with them conected
The junction box is mounted on a wood panel.
There is a ground to to solenoid to junction box what good that does as its mounted on wood. I had a bit 16gage wire cliped it to box and to side boat, it got hot,,, I know a thin wire,,,
I'm little afraid to ground box to motor with a wire in case I fry something.I have a picture of juction box but could not figure how to post it so you could see it.Hows one know what UBB Code for a picture. Computers are new to me and electric another story.
You are right no charging system .I have the negative cable on battery and when I TOUCH THE POSTIVE THERE IS A GOOD SIZE SPARK . IT'S LEFT A MARK ON THE TERMINAL. THIS IS NOT GOOD ..RIGHT
How do I make sure my systems is grounded? or should it be.

By the way thank you very much in trying to help me. This typing by the way takes me awhile as I use one finger and I have Parkensin's.Againe Thank You...Michael.
PS is it possible I could email you a picture I think my email is advailable...when you email..if you do in the subject window put JUNCTON BOX 1965 ...please so I know it's not spam

We will solve this thing one way or another. I am not a boat expert, but this is purely electrical. I'll take another crack at it.

Basically we have an ignition switch, a solenoid, a starter motor and a few wires to look at.

From your posts, the ignition switch and the solenoid are good because you replaced them with new ones. The starter motor is also good because every-time cables are connected to the battery, the motor will start. Logical reasoning tells me the wiring is bad. So let us go through the process of elimination. Refers to diagram above.

First we must identify a few things. On your solenoid there should be at least three nut/bolt type connections. A small one( see diagram point B) and two larger ones( see diagram point A and C). The smaller nut/bolt setup should have a small gauge wire connected to it. Usually red in color. That wire goes directly to the ignition. There should be no splices at any point along its entire length. On one of the larger nut/bolt, there should be a large gauge wire connected to it. Usually 6 gauge or larger. This wire runs to the positive side of the battery (see diagram line 3). On the remaining nut/bolt, a large wire from the inside of the motor housing connects to it. Note; some starters do not have this on the outside of the motor housing but rather done internally.

Make sure cables are disconnected from negative and positive battery leads and the ignition key if off and out of the key hole Now do continuity test on the following:

1) Be certain that "line 3" is not connected to "point B" or "point C". If "line 3" is connected to "point C", the starter will start when battery leads are connected. To find out if this wire is in its proper location, place one lead of a continuity tester on the positive cable where it connects to the battery positive lead and the other end on "point A". If you get continuity, the wire is in the correct location. If not move the second tester lead off "point A" and place it on "point C". If you get continuity, this wire is in the wrong location. Move it to "point A". If no continuity, redo the test. This time place second tester lead at "point B". If you get continuity, it is in the wrong location. Move it to "point A".

2) "Line B" is switched at the ignition. Let see if this wire is doing what it should. place one test lead on the positive cable where connected to the battery. The second lead at "point B". Turn the key to start position and you should have continuity. Turn the key back to off position and you should have no continuity.

Report back anything different. I hope the igniton switch and solenoid you replaced are new.

Re: Connect batery & motor starts ..Help

Dude and all that have help me MUCH THANKS...yes it has been fixed and some..will keep this short.

I start tracking with a battery ..tiny light & wire. Must let you know was moore wires than needed & a b c & d on solenoid..I could not figure it out.
Yes to the boat yard ...it took them almost a day to find the problems, yes more than one. I had put wires back right but in rebuilding the boat had driled a hole in a hidden wire that fry more wires. The harnest of wires to motor started to smoke..pealed back cover no insulation on some of the wires. By end of day all where replaced.
Well that's that.....but

On the way there hit a bump on bridge they was working on at 45mph and my tung on trailer got twisted. Tomorrow I will build a new one 3/8 steel...and than I going fishing even if have to sit in boat by waters edge to fish. No it will run.

Thanks again what a problem!

Surely not in the St.Louis area!!!! :D The question is, where can you go around here without hitting a huge bump.... :(

Re: Connect batery & motor starts ..Help

Home from trip to Kinkade Lake Motor rad great. but 2 little lghts had but on boat don't work now as the wire was pulled right out switch by the shop that fixed the other problems and I had lost a bearing budy that shop put on to replace the lost one on that bump. That lasted half hour as that one on that did not fit right.
The story goes on hope ends soon.

My budy and I had a good time hope your weekend was good.
