Hi,

I have a 2002 Volvo 4.3 GL-B, and want to connect the external tachometer I have to set the idle and check WOT because I don't trust the tach on the dash. The problem is, it connects to the positive side of an ignition coil and a ground. I don't see any exposed connections on the coil? just the grey connector. Where else would I be able to connect it? I'm assuming the wire running to the dash tach gets its signal elsewhere.

Thanks for your help.

The gray wire coming out of the coil is still the one going to the dash for the tach.
Most newer have an inductive pickup that clamps on spark plug wire like the timing lights do. Many of the timing lights today have a tach built in.

Don't assume that your external tach has a better margin of error than your dash mounted tach as it probably doesn't. Get a timing light with a tach readout. That's what I use and it works great, esp. for checking advance.
