Re: connecting dash harness to motor harness

Don't you think it might help if you told us what you were working on? Such as what year, make and model engine and outdrive, what instruments you have, and the items in the second picture were added by someone other than the boat manufacturer so only the person that added it knows what the wires are associated with. You eliminate an AMP gauge by disconnecting the two large wires from it and joining those two. Just don't try to connect a voltmeter to them. The speedometer is not engine related nor is the fuel gauge. The tach, oil pressure, and water temp connect to the coil, and the appropriate senders on the engine. A service manual for your engine/outdrive will have the diagrams you need.

Yes of course. The boat is a 23ft Hourston Glascraft (1973)

The Engine is a new chev 350 with a volvo 270 leg
The guages are original
In the sec photo Thats my handy work. As the harness plugs didnt match
I have a seloc book. But it has no Diagrams with that dash soleniod

Let me ask this... Does the red and yellow wire coming from the engine starting relay go to the same place on the ignition switch as the positive coil wire.

The diagram shows the positive coil led going to the distribtor. But I only have one black wire coming from my distribtor from page a 60

Re: connecting dash harness to motor harness

Suggestion: Why not obtain the "factory" service manual for whatever "factory" wiring you have on this engine. Failing that, draw out the connectors, add the wire colors and what they connect to on the engine. Do the same for the boat (console) harness and we can then help you mate the two. Failing that, here is what you need to track down.

1) large red cable (+12 volts) from the engine goes forward to the 'B' (battery) terminal on the ignition switch. In the RUN position, the "I" (ignition) terminal will have +12 volts on it and it feeds back to the engine to power the ignition system which may or may not have a piece of resistance wire in it to serve as the ballast for the coil. The "S" (start/solenoid) terminal has +12 volts on it when the key is in the start position. That wire goes to the starter solenoid. The starter solenoid may have two small terminals on it. One is the "S" or start terminal, the other is the "R" (resistor) terminal. That terminal has a wire that bypasses the aforementioned "ballast resistor" so a full 12 volts is applied to the coil for starting. The "S" (send terminal) on the oil pressure and water temp gauges goes to the oil pressure and water temperature senders on the engine. +12 volts for the instruments comes from the "I" terminal on the ignition switch. Ground for all instruments connects to the ground (black) wire in the harness that runs back to the engine. The "Voltmeter" (not an ammeter) in your picture of the instruments is not related to the engine at all. It simply needs +12 volts with the key on and ground. Add a circuit from the NAV light switch to power the internal lights on all instruments. Best I can do for you with the info at hand (or lack of it). Here is a generic console wiring digram that should help figure out the console end:

Re: connecting dash harness to motor harness

ok First off thanks for the input.
I think I am going to remove the amp Gauge and the dash solenoid and go from there.

This pic is of where the dash harness meets the engine harness. It is labled but small. Save to your picture file then zoom in on it.. Same for the underdash photo labled but to small to read. (took me hours to label up those pics)
