Just a quick note:
I wrote my response to use it as a planter not because it couldn't be rebuilt, but because it would be far more expensive to fix that rusty powerhead than to get a good used one. If that powerhead has some kind of intrinsic value to it like sentimentality, by all means rebuild it. It's absolutely true that it can be done. Why anyone would want to, as easy as it is to get a good used one I can't figure out. I know folks rebuild the really old ones because they're actually rarer than most. But a '55 7.5hp was probably the top selling outboard of all time, and it's just too easy to get a good used one.
Then again, I'm no expert powerhead rebuilder and maybe you can find really cheap bearings and new crankshafts and pistons. I just haven't found them yet, myself.
