Connecting tach to stator wire

Curious if connecting the gray wire from the wiring harness, to the yellow/gray wire from the terminal strip/stator is a bad thing? My rectifier is bad but I would like to get my tach working so I can set the idle. Not too mention I'm still early in my break-in period so I don't want to go over the max RPM's per my service manual.

Motor is an 85 'Rude 90hp E90TLCOS :)

Tach works off rectifier pulses ... if the rectifier isn't working, don't expect the tach to work. You might want to get a shop manual before you get things screwed up.

Re: Connecting tach to stator wire

I have an OMC service manual and tested the rectifier per the manual and J. Reeves' post in the FAQ's for water cooled rectifiers. Both tests showed the rectifier was bad which explains why my tach was never working after I installed it. However, when I connected the gray sending wire from the wiring harness to the yellow/gray wire per J. Reeves' post, the tach started to work. Hence my question on whether leaving it connected to that wire on the terminal strip is a bad thing or not.
