Looking for some possible advice on a purchase. A friend recently purchased their retirement sailboat and asked if I'd be interested in his 2006 Bennington 2050GL. It's very clean and well-maintained. Before he posts it for sale, he offered it to me for $5,000. It currently has a 10HP motor on it due to restrictions on his local lake.

is this a decent price? I see prices ranging for much higher on many sites and dealerships. However, i'd have to turn around and put a larger (60hp maybe?) on it. so, that's another $6-$7k

With that expected additional expense, is $5K a decent price? Granted, without seeing the boat, etc., it's a rough guess, but thought I'd ask here anyway.... Thanks for any responses.

Welcome to iBoats! :welcome:

Bennington makes high quality boats, and that's a very good price for my area. You should be able to repower it for less than $6K, especially if you trade in the 10 HP that's on it. No need for a brand new motor.

My first thought is that the upholstery on a boat that age is very likely shot, or very close to it, unless it's been replaced already or received unusually good (stellar) maintenance. Look for any discoloration on top of the seat backs or stitching that's pulling apart. Look for a soft and supple feel. If it feels hard, it's got one foot in the grave yard. If it does need to be replaced, you could double what you have into that boat. Add the price of a different engine to that, and you could be looking at MUCH newer boats all ready to go.

Love the Benningtons though. No reason to be shy of that boat.

As far as power, some careful shopping could yield a used engine with a lot of life left in it for half of what you're thinking.

You must have a lot of neglected boats in your neck of the woods. The upholstery on my '94 is original and still in pretty good shape. Heck even some of the upholstery in my '88 Bayliner is still decent and has definitely not been pampered. But the OP stated the Bennington had been well cared for.

As NYBo stated, you can always trade the 10hp in on a larger motor, but my thought is, if you have no restrictions on hp where you're gonna boat, I wouldn't go below a 90hp. Bennington Pontoons are very well built and somewhat heavy, although you didn't state the size. But, that's just my ramblings.... Good luck..

first question, does it have a trailer? If so what kind.If no trailer add around $1800.00. If you talk to a Bennington dealer they say that there the best. We had a 24 foot Star Craft. It had a 90 hp Mercury two stroke very good on gas. 90 hp will move you along very well but not a speed boat. What set up are the controls set for.

Thanks for the input and questions...answering some...yes, it comes with a trailer, which is in great shape. Max HP on this model is 115hp. We’re thinking a 90hp Mercury to put on it. Cost is a bit more than we wanted, but thinking resale in a few years.
