I found this outboard on Craiglist. The seller lives a town over from me. http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/boa/99639165.html

I can't really get much more information until the seller contacts me back and hopefully I can check it out and get the serial number, etc.

How are the older Mercury motors in terms of reliability and part availability?

I am also concerned as to whether I'd be overpowering my 16' hull. The plate says "Maximum Horspower: 85." I'm intending on upgrading from a 35HP that only yields about 15MPH. Would looking around in the 60-70HP range be more economical in terms of carrying capacity and fuel consumption?

Assuming I had an appropriate manual, how difficult would installation be? It seems that the ignition and remote controls are already configured. I'm mechanically inclined, but havent had much experience with outboards.

I wasn't looking in the upper horsepower range since I figured a faster motor would be out of my financial range. However, $450 seems a little hard to pass up on a seemingly good, working motor. I'll have to wait until I see it first hand before, of course.

Thanks in advance for any advice. :)

Re: Considering this motor

Just a few thoughts. The Mercury motors are generally fine motors.Just get a good running test.Keep in mind any outboard will sometimes run fine in a tank or on muffs and not work correctly on a boat.
The usual problem is a dirty or gummed up fuel system.
Your 77 will generally get better mileage than say a similar motor from say 1965.
But if you can move up to at least 1985 you will get prop rated horsepower plus an additioonal 10 to 20% better mileage.Your 77 85 hp. is probably about 80 or 81 at the prop hardly enough to notice but a little something more in 1985 or newer.Better mileage is pretty important with Gas approaching $4 a gallon.
If you let us know what type boat you have and how you intend to use it we can probably help you decide on a motor.

Re: Considering this motor

The boat's a 1980 Renken 157-BR. It's 15' and weighs appx 890 pounds. With the 35HP Evinrude, I have to run at WOT constantly to get a decent cruising speed with just myself in the boat. It needs extra muscle to transport 2 or more people. One time I took out two buddies who are over 200 pounds, and the motor sounded like it was going to blow up due to the strain.

I'd like to get into the 30+ MPH range. My trips are usually never longer than 8 miles round trip. I have a 15 gallons tank. I obviously wouldn't be running at WOT with the 85, but I would always know the extra oomph would be there if needed.

Re: Considering this motor

Normally I would wait for you guys...but the seller put it on ebay and I can potentially get it for under $300. I can't lose...if it doesnt work as I would like it to I'm sure a mechanic will take it off my hands.

Re: Considering this motor

Heey,

I have that exact same engine; same year...1977.

I'm not a mechanic; but I've learned a lot about this engine in the few short months that I've had it. Feel free to ask me...I'd be pleased to help if I can.

One thing to look out for...the wiring harness on mine was in such bad shape that I was afraid to hook up the battery before replacing it. The wires were bare in places...the insulation had just flaked off. Common; Im told. A new wiring harness is available for appx $100.00...but I took the suggestion of a few people here and just re-wired it myself.

From what I've gleaned from those here in the know on the older stuff...the 85 is a pretty good motor...at least for it's day. I'm sure we both could do a lot worse...and parts seem to be readily available.

Good Luck...I used to live on the Island...lots of greast boating around there. Hopefully your engine turns out to have been used only in fresh water though...that makes a big difference when they get that old.

Thanks for reading, Chuck

Whoops I thought I had it...but someone proxy bid an insane amount of money! I would have paid more than what was listed on craigs list. Too bad he threw that little monkey wrench in. Thanks for your replies guys :)

If it's in good shape looks like a good deal. Just hope it hasn't seen much salt water(Ruff on them) The pic looks O.K. but hard to tell in a pic. Tim
