consoles to tillers

Ive been looking lately at used outboards online, specifically for a tiller in the 40-60hp range. Thats prefered anyhow. Problem is 98% of what i see is for consoles, not tillers.

The question I have is; Is there a brand outboard that is more known to be easier to modify to a tiller than others? I am not stuck on newer or older as long as it appears to be in good condition and runs.

I know this is an open to opinion kind of question. But opinions can help.

Thanks guys.

It's easier to convert a tiller system into a remote one and viceverse, don't know about a factory delivered remote version in which probably the tiller arm that joins to the engine's "base" is missing. Tohatsus, Nissans are friendly to convert, a matter to check them out.

Well maybe you need to look at this from another perspective. You could take a console controlled engine and rig it up for the controls to install right at the engine area and then install a handle to control the steering. That way you will have a key start, and a throttle control and shift control at your fingertips and use the installed handle to steer it. Could be a really neat setup and a lot easier to use and potentially sell years later too... Just a suggestion... :noidea:

That thought has crossed my mind, I have controls/keys for a merc, but i think throttle and steering in one hand is more suited for what I need. But that idea isnt 100% out of the question.

You could buy a spare tiller assy, but probably will find OB's in that range don't have a base to fix tiller to. With such 40-60 HP engines wouldn't venture to install any other steering system besides a tiller, could be dangerous to controll once at speed.

most can be converted, but it can be costly. Mercy and Johnson/Evinrudes will be the easer and least costly to convert because you can find used parts on eBay. New it can cost 500.00 to $1000.00 to convert.

Appreciate the tips guys. Thinking more on the hp range and dangers on it, I may just settle for lower hp range thats already a tiller. If more hp needed in the future ill probably have to go back to a console.

No issues on HP range with a tiller, we run tillers up to 300hp here. It just depends on where you live as to the availability of them.

Yep, no issues running factory made tiller engines, adapting tiller to an engine that's a factory remote version in which doesn't have a proper swivel bracket to install a tiller to it's another story.

If wanting to buy used a 2 stroke Tohatsu 40C tiller version is a good start. Weights bit more than a 30 HP.

Because of how they mount, most newer motors will easily accept a tiller, the issue is the cost if it didn't come with one.
