Hi:
I have a 1984 50HP Johnson SeaHorse. I do not have the original owner's manual but a SELOC manual. I plan to get the original manual but in the meantime can someone help me with motor starting questions. I have a control box like what is in the picture (sorry it so small). Basically it just has a single large lever for forward and reverse on the side and then a lever like the one on top that can be lifted. I am pretty sure it is for idle speed? The previous owner quickly showed me how to start the engine but maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention. It does have an electric choke which is activated by pushing in the key.

My main questions is: Do I lift the idle lever all the way up when I am starting the motor. I seem to recall he was turning the key and lifting this lever up and down at the same time, but not sure.

The reason I ask is I was working on the boat and decided to start the engine with the flushers on just to practice and to keep the motor from sitting too long and it took awhile to start. I did not have the lever up all the way.

Just to go through proper procedure:

1. Make sure gas tank vent open
2. Prime Bulb until hard to compress
3. Turn key and hold in for choke
4. Lift handle to increase idle?
5. Once warmed up, push lever down all the way?

Am I missing anything?

Also, when using the flushing attachment, is it bad to have the engine idling at higher RPMs when it is warming up?

Also, when shifting from forward to reverse do you need to stop in neutral like a car? When we did the sea trial I saw him dock the boat nicely by pulling in at an angle and then shifting in reverse quickly and turning the wheel to bring the back of the boat close.

Lastly, and sorry for all the questions, the pee stream seems pretty adequate but it is not very warm. Is that good thing?

THANKS

sounds like you got it down....

if the motor is tuned well, you might not have to lift the lever much... but you CANT shift forward with the idle lever raised!!!!

i would sometimes rev up and down when it was cold to keep the motor from stalling and not have to choke with that lever on my 50 hp...

do not rev past 1500-2000 max!!!! and not for any amount of time..ie seconds!!! you could throw a rod...there is no back pressure on the system...

when the boat is barely moving and the rpms are very low you can shift from forward right into reverse...you dont want to do it with very many rpms...it is just like banging gears... dont shift s l o w l y EITHER...shift or dont...you dont want to clang the gear edges against each other because you didnt shift fully in a timely manner......

that goes for nuetral into forward or reverse!!!

good luck
