Okay....The plastic gears in my control box $h!t the bed. Can they be replaced? If so, how do I know where to get them or what kind to get?

If the gears can't be replaced, I have no clue what kind of controls to get...Please help!

Look for a Johnson / Evinrude / OMC control box on ebay. I'd be willing to bet you'll find the entire box cheaper than just the plastic gears.

I've really tried looking....ever since your post. I've found some that will work, but they dont have the ingnition switch built in.

Re: Control Box Destruction...

Hi, new here. Good stuff.
I'm in the same boat (so to speak, sorry about the pun). Seems someone must have used regular grease in my control box on this 1980,50 Evinrude I just got. All the plastics are degraded. Even if I could find the parts and fix it I'm afraid more will go bad in short order. Is there a good "universal" after market controler. I think I'd rather buy a new or newer unit than take the same chance on another antique.
Thanks, Don

Re: Control Box Destruction...

need more info, do you have single lever, with ignition switch built in, or 2 lever, with ignition switch on console. agree the gears are expensive. a picture of your control, would add greatly to the success of the help you get.

Re: Control Box Destruction...

Evinrude/Johnson/OMC control boxes have slight differences.... from year to year.

I consider the primary match is to have the correct electrical plug....then followed by the cable hook up. (There are different cables to mount inside each box http://www.iboats.com/Evinrude-Cont...7577472--**********.715467768--view_id.243426)

If you are lucky enough to get a similar box (ebay?;)) and it is the same cables you are going to have the easiest installation.

Welcome to iboats people! :D

It's a single lever OMC box with the ignition switch built in. I'll try to get a picture on here for you tomorrow. Thanks...
