control box help

I have a 50hp merc on an 18ft. Bass buggy with a center console.I have a scraping noise inside the control box. It is very hard to move and it will start in gear.Please tell me how to get inside the control box to take a look see.I can only get a far as taking the shift handle off.Do I have to remove the box completely from the console and get to it from the inside? Yes. Once off you'll find a couple of screws that hold a cover in place that is access for the control cables (if it's a later model). You didn't say what model control box you have, or year of engine. Couple more screws and the box should come apart. Be careful, detent rollers like to fall out at this point, usually into the most inaccessible spot in the boat. <br /><br />Chris............
