Control box Question

Johnson control box ,1980 70hp Johnson. Can someone tell me what is this plug is for? The wires are cut an need to know what its for and if it has to be hooked up. Thanks for any help.... 1980 box I believe.

Yes either a tach if with 3 wires or if one wire a trim gage.

Just bought a tach cable at dealer cost me $39.00

Thank You, I take it that it does not have to be hooked up for the motor to run is that right?
I didnt know if it completed a circuit in the ignition some how.

There is still a plug end attached, remove it and you'll be just fine.

Thank you,im switching from a 40 hp to the 70 and I changed control boxes to the single lever that came with the 70hp motor and the plug in question kinda puzzled me. I have the tach from it but I was hoping to launch the boat and see how it runs before cutting console to install the tach because its kinda big. thanks again.
