Control Box

Does anyone know how you can test a control box on a shifter to see if it is functioning properly or not? If it were to go out when you were on the water would it make the boat motor shut down? This is for a 4.3L Mercruiser Motor the boat is a 1990 Model

I have the same engine mine is a 1988. what are you trying to check ?

I just want to know what to check before I have to get into the outdrive gears.

If you are talking about the kill switch yes. The dude I bought my boat from replaced the whole control assembly because it shorted out and the boat would not start in the ocean. $400 for control box $400 for towing. If you had that problem just take the wires off the switch to get home.
