control cable

hi all, i have just got myself a 1991 evinrude 70hp, my problem is the control cable on to the gearshift, on the gearselector on the engine there is a pice of plastic about 4in long,how do i fit my gearshift cable on to it????thanx all

Unless you are missing some parts, there should be a lever with a threaded stud attached to the back part of the plastic link with a pin. The end of the shift cable goes on this stud.
