Hi All,
A couple of years ago, I purchased a 1979 Evinrude 4HP of unknown condition. I finally made the time to go through it and restore it to use on my Zodiac.

I checked compression and came to 100 & 95 psi. But I found spark on one plug only. Traced the issue to the Power Pack (coils are good), which I ordered along with some other service parts.

While waiting for the parts to come in, I thought of restoring it cosmetically. Both the choke and slow idle knobs are broken and someone rigged some makeshift horror as you can see in the photo. While I understand that original knobs are no longer available (and I am not really stickler for originality) but wonder what would you use that is functional yet looks good.

Thanks..

There is no powerpack on this engine as I know of. Should be a plain magneto ignition with coils and points. You should look into this. How did you quantify that the coils are good?

Well, well-----The 79 models show a powerpack electronic ignition in the parts book.----There are likely numerous parts / knobs that can be adapted to fit.-----What condition is the spline on the end of the adjusting needle ?

Well, I scrounged through my left-over parts after I restored my MG and found an old choke cable. The handle looks to be a good candidate. It even says "Choke" on it. Bonus! Now to find a round knob for the slow idle.

What condition is the spline on the end of the adjusting needle ?
Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what splines and what adjusting needle. These motors are new to me. Could you please elaborate on this. Thank you.

The one knob is on the slow speed mixture screw.----The factory plastic knob just pushes onto the splined end.----I am in Ontario bins full of parts but too far away to help hands on !!

Thanks. I didn't know about the splines on the slow speed mix. It looks to me like a needle that's screwed in and out of the carb.

Yes it is a needle that screws in and out to adjust fuel mixture !---You likely need a needle with a spline it good condition too.-----But once the needle is set it does not need constant fiddling.----So a screwdriver slot works too.-----E-bay will have lots of parts for you.

Thanks.. Will look that up. :thumb:
The parts I ordered are coming tomorrow, I/m hoping to install them, service the motor and be on the water shortly. I have a carb rebuild kit (no float) but I'll try it first as is to see if it will run.
