Control rod length?

I static timed my outboard. I have set my timing to 30 degrees BTDC as suggested on this forum (book says 32 degrees BTDC). The attached diagram shows the length of the control rod should be between 3/8" and 1/2". Mine is currently at 5/16". Is this something I need to be concerned with?

Most important thing is the timing. I've found that these engines are old enough to have gone through many different owners, some of which have really rigged some questionable linkages, wiring, etc, etc. As long as the connection is not binding and moves freely, I don't think I'd be too concerned with it.

Per Frank A. I set mine at 1/2 inch. No further adjustments were needed.

It is nothing to get upset about. You MAY have the distributor pulley off by one tooth though. Set the flywheel to top dead center. Check that the long line on the pointer matches the 0 mark on the flywheel. Now check that the scrived curved line in the top of the distributor pulley matches the curve of the flywheel with the short straight line pointing directly at it.

If all that is correct, then that's where the engine wants to be--it is what it is.
