Good evening all,
I have a 1975 850 Mercury. I just had the carbs rebuilt, took it out and ran like a scalded dog.....Would not go into neutral and reverse has always been weak. I took apart the single handle controller and found the *** on the kidney cam broke which would not allow it to shift. OK....tried to find one....couldn't. I took cable out of control unit and made my own. Seems to work great but now I think??????it has very strong reverse and very weak forward. 1st question.....on the motor at the shift cable which way should the cable be in forward position, to the front of the boat or rear? 2nd question.....is there an adjustment on the motor? Thanks for your time.

Re: Controller Problem / Shift

Hi,

Yes there is an adjustment on the engine. The black barrel on the control cable is able to be turned on the shaft to sync up the control to the engine. It is just inside the cowling. The lock has a lock on it so it stays in place. It is a hinge type lock. No 27 in the picture http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury_parts/461/150.cfm The two little bars get pushed to the center of the cowling, then it swings towards the outside of the cowling.
You will have to take the throttle cable off to get at the shift cable.
