Controller wire colors? 8 pin plug pin usage?

I bought a low hours late 90's Mercury 115ELPTO, the motor was in a center console boat and the guy didn't want to part with the controls or ignition switch so he clipped the harness in the console I that's all I have. I picked up a couple of older controls with no wires and bought new shift and throttle cables.

Does anyone know which wire goes where in the controls? There's 8 wires, it's got the round 8 pin connector and has power tilt and trim. The control box is from a 1991 I believe.
I also have an earlier set of controls which I was thinking of use just for the older look, and then I'd make use of my existing dash mounted tilt and trim controls.

Re: Controller wire colors? 8 pin plug pin usage?

Can't anyone tell me what pin goes to what in the controller?
I've got a harness in one hand and a controller in the other with no wires at all.
The ignition switch is in the controller, the tilt and trim is on the handle but goes to three separate wires sticking out of the engine end of the harness, (they were marked).
I have a manual for the motor but it doesn't show a pin out of the plug or controller that I have. If I knew what each pin did, then the rest would be easy.
I have two controllers here, one has a push to choke key switch, that's the older one, the other has a button above the ignition switch. Neither has a lanyard switch. The one with tilt and trim in the handle has a trailer button as well, but I don't think that's needed for an outboard, although the controls on the dash also have a trailer button as well. (The original motor was a 1977 85hp with a 7 pin harness and flush mount controls and dash wiring only). I redid the dash and want to use surface mount controls.

Here's what I need to figure out:

Maybe if you give the color of the wires ......somebody will have a better chance of answering. Good Luck, it will get figured out.

Without knowing which box you have it's about impossable, here's my guess.

You should be able to convert that '77 harness to the newer motor. I did it myself.

Use Laddies wiring colors to make an interconnection diaghram. The '77 Control wire colors are orange(or salmon), black, red, grey, brown, white, yellow. The PTT wires are seperate and are blue, red, green.

Main harness black to black, red to red, white to purple, orange to black/yellow, grey to yellow/black, brown to grey, yellow to yellow, just as Laddies says. That motor should have two bullet connectors for the trim up and down wires. Blue is up, green is down.

The problem is that I don't have any wires in the controllers at all, just terminals.

Color codes do no good without associated pins in the plug. I should though be able to figure it out from the diagram above. The controller came from a junk boat, it had a Chrysler motor and Mercury control box and cables, the ignition was still on the dash and the choke was manual on the motor.

The controls work smooth and were free, so I figured they'd be a good choice as I believe their from about the right period and they do have tilt and trim in the handle.

Here's the controls and the harness plug on the end of the harness that came with the motor. This harness was cut off at about 17' long which is more than enough for my purposes here.

I also have an older set of controls like these which I found a pic of on ebay:

These would be the most ideal to use, that way I leave my existing tilt/trim controls on the dash and just wire up the motor to the controls using the later 8 pin harness. Which ever set which will be easier to get working is fine though.

Here's the plug I have that came with the 50hp motor, the t/t wires come out of the end and run to a pair of relays in the motor cover and out to the tilt motor. Hooking up the tilt is easy. I just don't want to toast a switch box.

The 8 main wires of this harness are as follows:(Not counting the t/t wires)

Black
Brown
Purple
Red
Yellow/Red
Yellow/Black
Gray
